The village of Redu
The village of Redu has about 500 inhabitants. But every year, thousands of tourists, curious people and book lovers visit this adorable little village located in the province of Luxembourg in the Belgian Ardennes.
It all started in 1979, when Noël Anselot returned from a stay in Hay-on-Wye, a town in Wales. Witnessing the Welsh village's passion for books, he decided to start a similar project in Redu.
After much deliberation and several dozen letters to book dealers and enthusiasts, the very first Redu book festival (Fête du Livre) took place on Easter weekend in 1984. This initiative was crowned with success. As a result, many bookstore owners, traders and craftsmen settled in this small village in the Belgian Ardennes. Since then, it has honourably borne its name “Redu – Book Village”.
The Redu Book Festival is held every year during the Easter weekend and attracts more and more visitors.
The bookstores in Redu have all moved into authentic buildings – houses, barns, etc. – in order to preserve the authenticity of the village. Every August, you can enjoy the night of the book, the stores are open all night, artists ensure the atmosphere in the village.
